Discipleship is the only form of leadership training that is described in detail in the New Testament. Jesus spent three and a half years making disciples of his 12 students. To disciple a person means more than merely teaching them. Discipleship trains a person. To train means that in addition to merely telling or dispensing information to a person, it shows them by example.
In 3 1/2 years of public ministry Jesus rarely spoke to the multitudes, but he daily trained his disciples. He talked with them, explained kingdom principles, showed them by illustrations from nature, quoted the scripture, and most importantly, lived his life in such as way that allowed them to see first-hand by example what he was teaching.
That explains what discipleship is all about. It is not preaching to the multitudes. It's about giving yourself to a few people on a regular basis so that they can see Jesus live through you and replicate your life.
Discipleship is easily understood through the example of sowing and reaping. Preaching to the multitudes is like taking seed to the field, broadcasting it by throwing it into the air, and hoping it will land in a fertile spot in which to grow. Discipleship is like digging a hole in the ground, planting a seed, watering it, weeding it, then harvesting it when it comes to maturity. One never knows what teaching alone can accomplish, since there is no way to know what seed will land on fertile soil and find optimum growing conditions. On the other hand, discipleship, according to Matthew 13:23, will always produce increase, some 100 times more, others sixty, and others 30. And the life of the disciples proved that Jesus was right. After Jesus' resurrection they turned the world upside down.
